"Denise Moffitt Vidunas Helping Hearts of the Year Award"

This award will be presented annually to an individual in recognition of their caring service to the New Mexico Association for Home & Hospice Care as an outstanding volunteer; exceptional service to patients and patient families; and for going above and beyond expectations in his or her community.

Denise Moffitt Vidunas passed too young. She is truly missed by the New Mexico home care family. For almost 25 years, she was an avid supporter and a tireless worker on many committees, volunteering and making a great difference for our association. She gave generously of her time and energies to make certain that her patients were cared for no matter the time of day nor the day of the week. In addition to her work responsibilities and volunteering for the association, Denise found time to serve her community by caring for the fragile, downtrodden, and homeless. And of course, none of us will forget Denise’s ever-present smile.

"Laverne Fincher Hospice Nurse of the Year Award"

This award will be given to an individual in recognition of their extraordinary clinical skills, willing mentorship of Hospice peers and unsurpassed dedication to patients and their families.

Laverne Fincher was an exceptional clinician in end-of-life care.  She had over 40 years of experience as an RN, having graduated from the University School of Nursing in Alabama in 1964.  She worked for several Home Care and Hospice agencies throughout her career.  She was known by her co-workers as a tremendous mentor to all Hospice disciplines and her ability to coordinate care with families, caregivers and patients was unparalleled.  She exceeded the expectations of any employer for whom she worked.  Laverne passed away unexpectedly at the age of 63.

This award provides the Hospice community with a way to recognize and commend an individual who shares in Laverne’s extreme commitment and dedication to Hospice and to those at the end of their lives and their families.

"Marlene "Mike" Kracko Award for Professionalism"

The New Mexico Association for Home and Hospice Care is now accepting nominations for the “Marlene “Mike” Kracko Award for Professionalism”.  This prestigious award is presented annually to an individual in recognition of exceptional examples of professionalism and his/her commitment and dedication to providing and promoting homecare services.  Mike Kracko is retired from Hospital Home Care where she worked for approximately 20 years in areas of utilization review, quality assurance and as the Director of Nurses.  She provided vision and leadership in the field of Home Care through giving tirelessly of her time and energies to develop and maintain standards of patient care.  She persevered in her concern for the quality of services to the patient. 

This award allows us to promote quality home care while honoring Mike and an individual who shares her commitment.

"Catherine Edgar Award for Humanity"

This prestigious award is bestowed on an individual in recognition of their exceptional professionalism, kindness and patience revealed through their dedication to providing compassionate end of life care to patients and their families.

Catherine Edgar had 20 years of experience in Hospice care and grief counseling.  She was a model of openhearted selflessness who taught by example.  Everyone around her was elevated by her presence, giving more of themselves because of her.  Catherine gave willingly of herself to patients, their families, as well as her team members, to improve the care of the terminally ill while maintaining her professional boundaries.  She worked tirelessly to promote Hospice and its philosophy.   Catherine Edgar passed away in her home just a few months after her retirement.  When Catherine became aware that she was dying, she continued to walk the way in which she had taught so many others.

This award provides NMAHHC the opportunity to not only commend quality Hospice care, but to honor Catherine Edgar, as well as an individual who shares Catherine’s devotion.

The Homemaker of the Year Award

This prestigious award is bestowed annually in recognition of a homemaker who provides high quality care to patients in their place of residence. Homemakers are an integral and irreplaceable part of home care services. The services they provide help to maintain a patient’s ability to stay safely in their own home. By providing such important home care services, the Homemaker has a significant impact on the lives of the patients he/she
serves.

Hospice Aide of the Year Award

This prestigious award is bestowed annually in recognition of a hospice aide who provides high quality, compassionate care to his/her patients in their place of residence.  Hospice aides are integral and irreplaceable members of the hospice interdisciplinary team.  The outstanding care and support they provide offers great comfort to not only the patient but also the caregivers.  Their special way of caring and contributions to the hospice team allows the hospice patient to die with dignity surrounded by the people and things that they treasure.

The Joie Award for Home Health Aide of the Year

This prestigious award is bestowed annually in recognition of a home health aide who is a member of a multidisciplinary team that provides high quality care to patients and families in their place of residence.  Home Health Aides are an integral and irreplaceable part of the services provided by home care and hospice agencies and help to maintain a patient’s physical and emotional well-being.  By providing such important health care services, the Home Health Aide has a significant impact on the lives of the patients he/she serves.

In grateful recognition of those who serve as Home Health Aides, the Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 343, designated the week of August 13 through 19, 1990 as “Home Health Aide Week” on August 10, 1990.  George Bush, President of the United States of America proclaimed the week and called upon the people of the United States to observe with appropriate programs and activities.  Joie Glenn, former Executive Director for the New Mexico Association for Home & Hospice Care, was significantly instrumental in getting this bill through Congress and is recognized for her devotion and tireless campaigning for recognition of the noteworthy contribution Home Health Aides provide.
